I teach both technique and interpretation. I teach a technique that is easily adaptable to most styles of singing, including “belting”, folk, pop, standards and opera.

I begin with the natural speaking sound, using simple melodic exercises. I start in the lower register and gradually bring the voice up to a comfortable higher register. I show the student how to sing smoothly through the “breaks” in the voice, blending and mixing the different registers through the transitional areas.

I help the student expand their awareness of how to fill up the lungs and how much breath to use to support the many types of sounds a singer can make. I also focus on what type of posture is required to allow the breath to work optimally. I always tailor the training to each individual’s level and ability to absorb new information.

With repertoire I focus on the meaning and feeling of a song and encourage the singer to go as deep as they can, to open up and be vulnerable to emotional expression. I also emphasize diction, where and how to breathe, subtlety and finesse, when to sing softly and when to let ‘er rip! Most of all, to get to the heart of a song and put your heart into it!

I have a Bachelor of Music, Vocal Performance, from Wilfrid Laurier University, with guitar as a second study. I started playing folk and pop music at a very early age, and have a large repertoire of popular standards of many types. I have played solo in many different venues. I have also sung with Vancouver Opera, The Canadian Opera Company, orchestras, professional choirs, church choirs, a Ukranian dance band, a Chinese World Music band, toured and performed all over North America, Asia and Europe.

I welcome students of all voice types, male or female.

I consider myself both a teacher and coach – I work from the absolute fundamentals of voice production all the way through story, emotional conection, and performance.

’ve been teaching voice since 2002, and have developed a teaching style integrating my knowledge of movement and dance, natural voice technique, acting, and various body movement re-education techniques. My goal is to cultivate the magic that happens when people sing together; the creation of something greater than the sum of its parts; the inexplicable and undeniable euphoria felt by a group of voices singing in harmony.

I believe that every voice deserves the euphoria of singing; every voice can grow, learn, play, and be expressive. Want to experience the sheer joy of your voice? It would be my pleasure to join you on your journey!

The pursuit of singing is a joyful, life enriching endeavor.  My aim is  to help students find the unique quality and beauty of their voice and to help them uncover it’s maximum resonance, strength and longevity.

I come from a background of Musical Theatre, where I have worked as a performer for over 37 years. My vocal training includes a Bachelor of Music from McGill University, a Bachelor of Education from Simon Fraser University, a Master’s Degree in Fine Art (Acting) from York University and a diploma in Pop and Jazz Studies from Grant MacEwan College.   My passion for the voice and how the voice works began in my undergraduate voice studies at McGill University, and this lead me to pursue a career in musical theatre and teaching.  Though I love performing I am fascinated with the process of learning, and how to bring out the best in each individual voice.  Everyone has the ability to sing, and I love to see the face of a new student light up after hearing a voice emerging that they didn’t think was there.

My music theatre performance career spans 37 years and includes summer stock theatre,  regional theatre, international touring and mega musicals.  I’ve played the roles of Dodger in Oliver, Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, Charlie Brown in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Gilbert Blythe in Anne of Green Gables, Robert in Company and Sparky in Forever Plaid just to name a few.  I’ve been nominated for Jesse Awards 3 times and received one for my work in Forever Plaid.   I’ve done two long running shows:Forever Plaid in Vancouver and I originated the role of Gaffer Gamgee in the mega musical The Lord of the Rings at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto.

I base my technique in the classical pedagogy of Richard Miller (The Structure of Singing) while keeping informed about new developments in technique and complementary disciplines like Alexander Technique and the Feldenkrais Method.   I am fascinated about the process of learning and am very patient.  A singer has a lot going on at once, voice production, emotions, and movement; all while looking at an audience.  A singer therefore needs a solid technique and a teacher who appreciates the demands of learning to sing.
